I just love painting objects peeking through other objects. You can see all sorts of distortions including the colors through the multiple layers of overlapping objects. Look at that very cool blue reflection that appeared inside the rose colored glass from the taller glass behind.

Actually these gem toned glasses weren't glass at all, but rather made of plastic. They are more opaque than glass so, it was harder to see the softer muted reflections. However, cross my heart, they really were there. 

I painted this still life outside in full sunlight which made the colors and shadows bounce everywhere. Isn't it a happy painting? I should have named this one Mardi Gras. It looks like a parade with confetti floating in the air!

In this not-so-still life, painted in plein air, my heliophobic orb  tried his best to avoid the sun's scorching rays. He quickly ducked behind the glass and bucket, where he hung out all afternoon on the shady side of the table totally unaware of his transparent cover. By the end of the day, despite massive coatings of SPF 50, he suffered a brutal Sunkist ... just look at that rind! What a shame ... now he's sure to peel! Stay tuned as the saga continues.

Looks like more layoffs may be coming down in the corporate world. Money is tight and jobs hard to come by. This high-ranking corporate official has some tough decisions to make in order to trim excess overhead. "Aha! Diversification would offer me the option to restructure, filling newly-created positions from within." He has asked for volunteers, hoping several of his long-time employees might be willing to transfer into the highly-speculative Cobbler Department...Someone just has to step up to the plate.

What a bully! Momma mango roller is at it again, crushing down the last green tree in the neighborhood to make room for yet another highway headed somewhere. Progress they call it! What a shame, and just as this comfortable citrus couple, lime and orange, were settling down to enjoy a quiet picnic under the cool shade of the canopy. 


My seven-year-old grandson and I had a great time painting from this still life we set up yesterday. While in a panic to prevent an obvious tragedy, I tensed up and painted a bit tighter than I like. To me, less is always more...the fewer brush strokes the better. I guess I just got carried away trying to rescue these near-casualty victims from ultimate destruction. Whew, that was a close call!

Today's painting was my entry to this week's "Color Challenge" at Daily PaintWorks. In this color theory assignment, we were to limit the colors in a painting by using one of three color schemes: complimentary, split complimentary, or triadic. I used a complimentary color scheme of orange and blue which are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. I also used orange as the dominate color (see the color wheels below for more explanation). Having one color dominate also adds unity to the composition and helps lead the eye to the center of interest by projecting it forward. As you can see, the center of interest here is my big-bad-scary sugar bowl from which the little orange is trying to hide behind the slice of cantaloupe. He was caught orange handed sneaking sugar out of the bowl and is now in big trouble.

Day by day, stroke by stroke, painting by painting I am learning. Life is exciting... and oh so grand!

"Glass Houses"

This was my submission to this week's Daily Works Painting Challenge-"One Color per Stroke." The rules were to use a ½” wide brush, mix one color, put down just one stroke on the canvas before mixing a new color and putting down one more stroke. Repeat until completed. The painting is suppose to end up sort of looking like a mosaic. I love the loose abstract quality this method produced but what a struggle. I had chosen these three shady characters to model for me. They did a great job holding the pose...almost never even budged...Well, that was until the fight broke out. Perfume started it off by squirting orange right in the face which totally infuriated her. She turned bright red and burst into tears causing her makeup to run down her face onto the floor in a terrible mess. Blue, losing his cool, jumped to her defense, clanking the big bully upside the head. Returning to his pose and feeling quite proud of himself, he literally glowed with masculine pride. They are all now in time out!

Resembling a huge beached whale that split from the pod, this lazy eggplant rests alongside the shore blocking icy-cold combers of foamy surf from crashing into a salty shaker and a couple of local beach rollers. Shivering in the March breeze...clad only in their skins...these bright summery spirits take on the glow of an unseasonably sunny day in the Gulf. These colors just make me feel happy.

This was my submission to a painting challenge posted on Daily PaintWorks website. The challenge was to paint the same object eight times. But, the killer was the condition that you could only spend 10 minutes on each painting. Whew, nothing like a little pressure here. It reminded me of the game show "Beat the Clock." Now I know why they call this a challenge...I need a nap.
