"Morning Calling on Dock St.

"Morning Calling on Dock St.
18x24" oil on gallery wrap canvas
I painted this image in response to a photograph by Yann Meersseman and wife Moira Fitzgerald at Vineyard Colors. They graciously allow artists to paint from their work, provided you send them a copy of the final art.
Although I haven't painted in quite awhile due to the demands of my graphic design business, the intriguing play of light and dark attracted my eye and inspired me to pick up a brush.
There was a lot of detail in the photo, so I tried my best not get tight, but rather give loose impressions of found object. It felt so good to get back to my easel!
This piece is being donated to my church's annual fundraiser.
Thanks for viewing.

Sweet Spot Rocker

"Sweet Spot Rocker", 30x20" oil on gallery wrap canvas
I painted this piece from a photo I took last summer in Naples, ME on the front porch of the Lakeview Inn where we were staying for a wedding. This was such a delightful place with the most  beckoning porch. I could have sat out there and rocked for days on end. Now that's relaxing at its finest.

The reference photo for this painting wasn't the greatest as the chair was perched in heavy shade, so I had to take some creative license to make the chair, my focal point, look alive with color.

I can't figure out what category to place this painting in? There is a landscape backdrop, but the focal point is the chair? Would that be considered a still life? But, what if it was gently rocking from the wind? Would that make it a not-so-still life? I suppose if someone were sitting in the rocker would it also be considered figurative? To make this more confusing, this was a covered porch, so does that make it an interior painting? Any thoughts? Hmm?

This piece is being donated to my church's Annual Gala for their Live Auction, so it isn't for sale, but wanted to share.

Thank you for pausing to contemplate on the front porch.

Montana Moments

"Montana Solitude" 6x6" oil on Gessobord
SOLD
"Something opens our wings. Something makes boredom and hurt disappear. Someone fills the cup in front of us: We taste only sacredness." —Rumi

I painted this plein air piece on the first morning we arrived in Montana, from atop of the hill where my sister and brother-in-law's main house is perched. Gazing out across the property I noticed the isolated house off in the distance. It lay nestled in the lap of golden valley, surrounded by looming mountains, donned with a touch of lingering snow on the farthest peak. The house looked a bit vulnerable, as if it were about to be devoured and disappear into the foreboding shadowy background.

As the morning ended I realized, I was the one who had been swallowed up, up into the delightful solitude of the moment.

Painting is always my medium of choice to disappear into a day!

SOLD - Nutcracker Sweet

"Nutcracker Sweet" 4x4" miniature oil on black canvas panel
SOLD

"A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song."— Chinese Proverb
This little blue bird is a red-breasted nuthatch, the latest in this series of wintering birds. I sure wish birds could talk and share the secrets of their happiness; I know I could learn much.

We all have our own unique songs to express and share with the world if we can just spread our wings and soar. I believe that artists paint because they cannot do otherwise. I suppose I'll always strive to capture on canvas the joy I feel for birds... I'll listen to their warbling ballads... and wonder.

Thank you for sharing in my song today.

Strolling Sicily

"Strolling Sicily" 8x6" oil on canvas panel

Overview of Taormina
Today's painting was taken from a photo while strolling along the streets of Taormina, Sicily. This was a stop along the 10-day Mediterranean cruise I recently mentioned in my blog. A region of Italy, Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. I fell in love with this charming little city, its quaint streets, and Mt. Etna looming in the background.

Believing that less is always more, I decided to simplify this painting by leaving out several overhanging balconies adorned with window boxes overflowing with colorful flowers. There was so much going on in the busy scene already, I wanted the viewer's attention to be drawn to the couple walking along in the drizzling rain, creating those magnificent reflections in the cool illuminated cobblestone walkway.

Taormina why, must we say goodbye? My family and I only had one day to spend in Taormina, I would have loved to have stayed longer, but as you can see, I have not forgotten thee.

Thanks for viewing my painting!

Take It All Off

"Take It All Off" 8x6" Oil on Canvas Board

Talk about brazen behavior! Can you believe this outrageous redhead caught in a quiet neighborhood of Concord in decadent flamboyance? That's right! Baring herself in a showy burlesque, she literally flaunted herself at the curb attracting the attention of every passerby. Despite the chilling rain, she exposed one long slender limb after another in an ostentatious display. A shocking performance!

"Splendor in the Glass"

"Splendor in the Glass" 6x6" Oil on Canvas Panel
Click to Purchase
What a bully! Momma mango roller is at it again, crushing down the last green tree in the neighborhood to make room for yet another highway headed somewhere. Progress they call it! What a shame, and just as this comfortable citrus couple, lime and orange, were settling down to enjoy a quiet picnic under the cool shade of the canopy.

My seven-year-old grandson and I had a great time painting from this still life we set up yesterday. While in a panic to prevent an obvious tragedy, I tensed up and painted a bit tighter than I like. To me, less is always more...the fewer brush strokes the better. I guess I just got carried away trying to rescue these near-casualty victims from ultimate destruction. Whew, that was a close call!

Thanks for viewing my painting!

Cana Can-Can 8x6"

"Cana Can-Can" 8x6" Oil on canvas

Miracle of miracles! Despite "exceptional" drought conditions, wild fires and record breaking heat all across Texas, imagine my surprise stumbling upon this thirsty can-can girl hanging on for dear life, like an Israelite lost in the desert of my scorched garden. From the time we moved into this house, some 20 years ago, I have had 5 ft. canas blooming from April through September expect for this year. With little-to-no rain all year, most everything is now shriveled and parched.

I felt like a merciless butcher chopping off this young ladies long slender neck and beautiful red mane for my still life. Buckwheat is now dead...but no longer thirsty! LOL Looks like I'll have to start buying flowers to paint this summer.
