"Morning Calling on Dock St.

I painted this image in response to a photograph by Yann Meersseman and wife Moira Fitzgerald at Vineyard Colors. They graciously allow artists to paint from their work, provided you send them a copy of the final art. 

Although I haven't painted in quite awhile due to the demands of my graphic design business, the intriguing play of light and dark attracted my eye and inspired me to pick up a brush. 

There was a lot of detail in the photo, so I tried my best not get tight, but rather give loose impressions of found object. It felt so good to get back to my easel!

This piece is being donated to my church's annual fundraiser.

This painting was taken from a photo I shot while on a retreat at Circle Lake in Magnolia, TX a number of years ago. The fall color, especially in the cypress trees at the water's edge, were stunning. The girl out on the lake canoeing was oblivious to my presence and the fact that she was posing for me. She is caught up in a moment of quiet stillness, and like the quote above, unaware of her tiny past or future; only the angle of the oar breaking the water held her serene awareness.

The oar of my brush glides along the textured canvas surface, pulling and dragging the many hues of color from shore to shore. There is nothing else in the world that exists except the small white raft, stained with crimson blood, that lies before me on calm open waters. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, dark violent storms arise threatening to sink my fragile craft. I dig in deeper to battle rough waves of value and color that pound in my head. The fear of capsizing at any moment laps at the sides of my vessel like Great Whites waiting to devour all.

I am always a little surprised when the day's journey comes to an end and I return...back to the dark room where I've been sitting for hours...to weigh in the day's catch. 

It's a rough job, but someone has to do it. : )

We arrived in Concord, NH last Thursday too late to do anything except nurse a glass of Pinot Noir, dive into a plate of New England mussels, clams and pasta...which knocked my socks off...and collapse into bed. 

Up bright and early the next morning, I stuffed 25 lbs. of tripod, panel box, paints, brushes, paper towels, canvas, painting medium, poncho, water bottle, camera, snacks into my backpack, and scouted out the closest park to our hotel about a mile away. Hiking up a steep hill, I arrived at White Park just as the gray clouds overhead began delivering...what must have been... all the siphoned rain meant Texas for the past year. The rain continued all day, so I decided to spend the time photographing the park, quaint houses, the Sate Capitol, old brick buildings lining the streets of downtown Concord, and every brilliant water-colored tree I met along the way. Fall color was exploding everywhere! Even the apple trees—gracing front yards of the typical clapboard New England homes—had dropped leftover wares into wasted puddles of red, yellow and green. 

Rain soaked and chilled to the bone, I returned to the hotel to download all the images onto my computer, and set up a make shift studio in front of a north light window in our room which opened onto Main Street. This painting is of the reed encircled White Lake reflecting a ghostly colored sky on its mirrored surface. What a picture perfect day!

This landscape painting was another challenge posted by DailyPaint Works. (above is the photo we painted from)

Painting a landscape feels like flying, such a welcome change of pace from still life. I love the loose flow of buttery pigment as it courses, glides, drifts, circulates, skims, oozes, swirls, and rolls off the fine tiny hairs of my brush with a story of its own to tell. The brush charts its own path catching light off vapors of layered atmosphere, fluid sweep of free-flowing water, or the crisp rustle of dry swaying grasses. 

It feels so natural to me, I can't imagine approaching a landscape in any other way. To labor over each exacting blade of grass, every ripple on the water's surface, or the intricate patterns of bark on a branch, would condense it all into a frozen frame of a girdle to sit lifeless and idle for all eternity. In a landscape, I want to capture the movement of breathing spirit. I want the viewer to feel the chill of the wind that's blowing through my hair, the warm rays of afternoon sun that sit perched on a shoulder, and to detect the decaying scent of autumn rising from the mists off the bank of cool waters. 

The artist job is to take it all in but then to simplify and filter down to the barest of it all, that which contains the whole. I still have miles of canvas to go but am loving my journey along the way.
