"Morning Calling on Dock St.

"Morning Calling on Dock St.
18x24" oil on gallery wrap canvas
I painted this image in response to a photograph by Yann Meersseman and wife Moira Fitzgerald at Vineyard Colors. They graciously allow artists to paint from their work, provided you send them a copy of the final art.
Although I haven't painted in quite awhile due to the demands of my graphic design business, the intriguing play of light and dark attracted my eye and inspired me to pick up a brush.
There was a lot of detail in the photo, so I tried my best not get tight, but rather give loose impressions of found object. It felt so good to get back to my easel!
This piece is being donated to my church's annual fundraiser.
Thanks for viewing.

In the Shade of Nye

"In the Shade of Nye"6x6" oil on Gessobord
NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE

"To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment."   —Jane Austen
I was enthralled by the fresh, lush green vegetation hugging tightly to this tiny abandoned log cabin on my sister's property in Montana. The sun, that morning, still low in the east, was painting luminous shadows on the blanket of still-wet grass, dappled in a myriad of sparkling light. The structure sits along the edge of a large park-like cluster of trees running along the banks of the Stillwater River.

I painted this mostly en plein air one morning, and then finished up in my studio once I returned home. Oh course this was gifted to my sister, so not for sale, but just wanted to share another memorable moment of my vacation.

Gosh, I'd love to live in this little-one-room castle surrounded by mountains and pastures. I can't think of anything grander...especially if they install a toilet!

Thank you for stopping by today.

Shuttered Repose

"Shuttered Repose", 14x11", oil on gessobord, (framed)

CLICK FOR PURCHASE DETAILS

“There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.”
                                    — Aldous Huxley

Do you think the subject of this painting is the action of transforming early morning light, or the opposing destruction of late afternoon darkness setting up camp in the final winks of a retiring sun at the end of a long hot 12-hour shift? We find ourselves surrounded in a world of camouflaged reality. Is the light pouring in between slats lighting up this room, or is darkness aggressively painting its seizing stripes of devoured territory like an insatiable, half-starved Pac-Man caught in hand-to-hand battle defending hard won borders of line, form and shape like an ebony eraser?

It's your call. Although the photo reference for this painting was snapped in the morning, there really is no right or wrong. We all see and believe what our senses perceive. We are just blank walls waiting to choose seats.

"Shuttered Repose", along with other pieces of my work, will be for show and sale next Saturday, June 21, from 2-6 p.m. as a part of the JoMar Visions', "Show it, Don't Say It!" exhibition. The studios are located at 902 Hardy St., Houston, TX 77020. See attached flyer. If you are in the area, please stop by and say hi.

Thanks for weighing in today. This painting is available for sale, however it will not ship until June 23.

Morning Headlines

"Morning Headlines" 10x8" oil on gessobord

"The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you;
don't go back to sleep."
— Jalaluddin Rumi, mystical poet

How I love being present to witness the first light of day as it streams in my east facing kitchen windows. Stepping boldly into the center ring with awesome power and majesty, this mighty force pummels it's way in through every crook and cranny, splitting open a gaping gash of light across the surface of dark wooden table. Instantly this force to be reckoned with, delivers another swift jab resulting in a death defying knock-out blow! Sun, the "winner and world champion" is silently proclaimed as rooster erupts in unabated joy. Darkness, has once again been trumped by the hope and resurrection of new day.

John Ciardi summed it up so perfectly, "Cry anything you please. But praise..."

Top of the morning to you. I hope you've enjoyed this not-so-still life.

Breath of Spirit

"Best of all is to preserve everything in a pure, still heart, and let there be for every pulse a thanksgiving, and for every breath a song. — Konrad von Gesner

I haven't been able to paint as much as I would like lately. My world has been moving at a furious pace with design work demanding most all of my time. However yesterday, my spirit finally caught up with me... and I painted!

I never seem to know what I am going to paint until I show up. It's interesting how the breath of inspiration always comes as a surprise visitor, spontaneous and unpredictable. Digging through photos of last summer, I came across this one from the Taos Ski Valley. I could again feel myself standing beside this bubbling mountain stream, soaking in the warm sunlight, as spirit summoned breath out of the dark sleepy shadows of late afternoon forest.
Making time to wander in silence, my heart opens wide to inhale breath of spirit in all its mystery and splendor.

Thanks for pausing today to listen to my song and for viewing my painting.

Something's Burning

"Colours are wounds of light."—William Blake

This painting was taken from the photo on the right. I snapped it along the banks of the Conejos River in southern Colorado, just as the sun began bowing down behind the mountains. I love this "magic-time" of day as cool haunting shadows stretch their way across the earth like enormous color erasers. In resistance, the sun seems to intensify its strength, shooting out hot flashes of the brightest hues, engulfing everything visible in a wash of illuminating light. To me, there is nothing more beautiful then to witness those last long-slender fingers of light as they scratch the earth in dire desperation to hold on to the day.

I hope you enjoy the light show. Thanks for viewing my painting.
