I have always been an enormous fan of Georgia O'Keeffe and her  large flower paintings. Regardless of size, I was just hoping to paint one that could be recognized as a rose...a very challenging subject.

For me, white is the most difficult color to paint. White contains all color as demonstrated by light refracting through a crystal. As the white beam of light passes through the crystal, it breaks into a full spectrum of colors found in the rainbow. Funny, I had always assumed black contained all color, when in fact it is the complete absence of all color. 

Sir Francis Bacon said, "In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." In this painting, I used a black background to set off and contrast the mostly all white foreground. Black and everything in between, can you see all the different colors I used to create this white rose? Creamy white, golden yellows, pale violet, soft blues, peach, and greens all used to create the illusion of white. Without the use of all the other graduating hues of color, all you would see is a flat, non-dimensional blob of white paint. Michele Cooper was quoted saying, "Given the right lighting, all the colors in the world can be seen in a white object."

This painting was taken from the photo on the right. I snapped it along the banks of the Conejos River in southern Colorado, just as the sun began bowing down behind the mountains. I love this "magic-time" of day as cool haunting shadows stretch their way across the earth like enormous color erasers. In resistance, the sun seems to intensify its strength, shooting out hot flashes of the brightest hues, engulfing everything visible in a wash of illuminating light. To me, there is nothing more beautiful then to witness those last long-slender fingers of light as they scratch the earth in dire desperation to hold on to the day.

"Seeing Summer" 6x6" Oil on Canvas Panel

Summer is knocking at my door with color! I've been noticing the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are back from their winter migration in Mexico and South America. They're lapping up sugar water at my feeder like it's nectar from the gods. 

Hummingbirds along with the sight of zinnias, found at my local nursery, puts me on high alert that summer's right around the corner. When I see zinnias I always think back to my childhood and memories of my grandmother's yard. She had a huge garden filled with these sun loving performers. Hot summer days at her house always included running through her sprinkler, filling up the bird bath, sucking on ice cubes made from Kool Aid, and picking zinnia's for an awaiting vase. 

Did you know that zinnias are a part of the daisy family? Zinnias can be found in a wide assortment of colors and all with meaning. For instance the magenta zinnia denotes "lasting affection", orange "constancy", white means "goodness", yellow "daily remembrance", and according to my sources, a mixture of zinnias—like the ones I have planted on my patio and in this painting—implies "thinking of the absence of a friend."
