The sleepy head models who posed for this painting were a mom's day gift. I love sunflowers and took a ton of photos of the quintuplets sitting near my kitchen window, while sunbathing in the morning light. These little ladies are definitely not morning people, for the life of me, I couldn't get them to lift their golden heads wreathed in Rapunzel tresses, and open their big brown eyes to face the camera. Finally the one in the back popped her head up and said good morning.


I really enjoyed painting this piece which is looser and more abstract than some of my most recent work. Stretching and reaching for light myself, I tried to stay focused on my goal of not reproducing each and ever petal, but rather to capture all the spots and shapes of colors I was seeing. It was fun giving my inner child permission to come out and color outside the lines. Jim Carey had it right when he said, "If you aren't in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret."

My daughter, Allie named this painting perfectly! Obviously, there is so much sibling rivalry going on among this group. Middle-daughter magenta Jan is squeezed in between her two showier sisters, Marcia and Cindy, adorned in attention getting orange. While their bright orange dresses are truly stealing the show, too much of a good thing would be boring. Jan's unique presence adds variety as she complements the lemon slices and soft yellow table top. 

Doesn't she look like a referee trying to break up a fight? Growing up as one of seven Dazey (pronounced daisy) sisters, I can totally relate to these feisty tulips. Totally out numbered, my two brothers never stood a chance.

On stage today, live and in color, all the way from Conroe, TX, welcome Z-Zinnia Tops, the red-hot trio of summer performers. I am a huge fan of these brilliant hand picked entertainers who tour here annually to the applause of sold out crowds of followers! 

This year they arrived so pumped up on nitrogen, I was afraid they might turn the entire scene into a wild frenzy. I was one step ahead of them though and quickly hosed the background down with some calmer cooling shades to settle these fellows down before they took to the stage. Gosh, I have to stay on top of everything!

Only one of the two paintings above is a duplicate of the one I already posted on Tuesday. Can you tell the difference? Look again. These are two separate paintings using the same magnolia for my subject, but one is from a bit further away. I entered both of them in the "Seeing Double Challenge" on Daily Paintworks and painted them simultaneously.

Gardenia Gratitude

Right on cue "April showers brought May flowers." My three gardenia bushes are literally loaded down with budding hopefuls. This one was the first to wipe the dew from her eyes, and unfurl intricate tiers of snowy-white petticoats. Once this floral symphony begins, the alluring bouquet will waft on waves of silent fragrance to fill all my senses. 

This flower always takes me back to the memory of my first corsage, which was also a gardenia. It was the most beautiful flower those 15-year-old eyes had ever seen. I was totally mystified how such a delicate... and seemingly... exotic flower could be alive in the dead of cold winter. Today, I am graced with a hundred of them every spring. Abundance is everywhere!

"Seeing Summer" 6x6" Oil on Canvas Panel

Summer is knocking at my door with color! I've been noticing the Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds are back from their winter migration in Mexico and South America. They're lapping up sugar water at my feeder like it's nectar from the gods. 

Hummingbirds along with the sight of zinnias, found at my local nursery, puts me on high alert that summer's right around the corner. When I see zinnias I always think back to my childhood and memories of my grandmother's yard. She had a huge garden filled with these sun loving performers. Hot summer days at her house always included running through her sprinkler, filling up the bird bath, sucking on ice cubes made from Kool Aid, and picking zinnia's for an awaiting vase. 

Did you know that zinnias are a part of the daisy family? Zinnias can be found in a wide assortment of colors and all with meaning. For instance the magenta zinnia denotes "lasting affection", orange "constancy", white means "goodness", yellow "daily remembrance", and according to my sources, a mixture of zinnias—like the ones I have planted on my patio and in this painting—implies "thinking of the absence of a friend."

Three-lips

While picking up ingredients for the Easter dinner I was preparing for our family of 20, I decided to purchase some flowers for a centerpiece. I was on a tight budget, but discovered some very ripe pink tulips, crammed into the overflowing slashed-price bucket, stuck against the back wall at Kroger for $2.99 a dozen. They were hidden from view by the more marketable, young buds with firm tight lips who were much richer and vibrant in color then these paling rejects.

Although my mid-life beauties were a bit faded and sagged a little with mouths agape, I decided they were perfect! After all, Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art." Now, I am sure she would agree this truth applies to flowers as well.

Unfortunately this bunch was catty and rude, whispering secrets to each other behind my back. These three-lips lasted just long enough for me to finish the dishes and paint them before they took their final bow and were tossed into the trash can.

Loves Me, Loves Me Not

We had a couple to dinner over the weekend; my centerpiece was this old vase beaming with yellow pom daisies. I figured I better paint them quickly before more petals decided to take their final bow.

Author John O'Donohue said, "A room that is yellow can throw a glad brightness back into the space it surrounds." I love the freshness of this color, as most of the walls of my house are painted a soft tint of yellow. However during our dinner, between the glow of candle light, the yellow walls and the brilliance of the daisies, my dining room was literally bursting with such luminosity, you practically needed sunglasses! In fact, the vibrations were so intense, my demure purple vase was totally blown over from the blinding rays, as the grapes huddled together sheltering their faces in the shadows.

Thanks for ringing round my pitcher full of posies today!

Did I fool you? I'll bet you thought this was going to be a painting of worms or bugs? But nothing creepy here, just a close up on a group of performers from that magnificent Rangoon Creeper vine that's crawling all over my back fence. 

These little gals are in a tizzy of utter euphoria after dancing around in the glorious gift of an all-day rain we received yesterday. Can you see the smiles on their faces? I love how they daily adorn themselves in soft billowing gowns of purest white, blushing pinks or rosy reds. The hummingbirds are wild winged with applause over these flaming clusters.

Miracle of miracles! Despite "exceptional" drought conditions, wild fires and record breaking heat all across Texas, imagine my surprise stumbling upon this thirsty can-can girl hanging on for dear life, like an Israelite lost in the desert of my scorched garden. From the time we moved into this house, some 20 years ago, I have had 5 ft. canas blooming from April through September expect for this year. With little-to-no rain all year, most everything is now shriveled and parched. 

I felt like a merciless butcher chopping off this young ladies long slender neck and beautiful red mane for my still life. Buckwheat is now dead...but no longer thirsty! LOL Looks like I'll have to start buying flowers to paint this summer.

SOLD -"Strut Your Stuff"

"Strut Your Stuff" 12x12" oil on canvas

This beautiful, bright-sunny floral arrangement was recently sent to my husband (first time he ever received flowers). I totally fell in love with the colors and started painting it immediately but then kept getting pulled away for one reason or another. Each time I went back to work on it, the flowers got a little droopier. By the end of the week, all of the flowers were faded and several had fallen off their stems. Thus, I was left to finish painting it from memory—which was not a bad thing—as it forced me to work quick and not overwork it. I do love the loose abstract quality.

This painting is sold but will be on exhibit at The Linda Watson Gallery in Conroe during the month of May.
