I've been a bit under the weather this week and tied down with wedding preparations, showers, and graphic design work, so I haven't been able to paint much. However, here is a commissioned piece that I have been working on for a friend.  I do love those sweet, sensitive eyes of contentment as this kitty sat before a window. Looks like more layoffs may be coming down in the corporate world. Money is tight and jobs hard to come by. This high-ranking corporate official has some tough decisions to make in order to trim excess overhead. "Aha! Diversification would offer me the option to restructure, filling newly-created positions from within." He has asked for volunteers, hoping several of his long-time employees might be willing to transfer into the highly-speculative Cobbler Department...Someone just has to step up to the plate.

An island in the sun, boats gather around this tropical resort casting sultry reflections that swirl a top foamy waters. This reminds me of all those exotic destinations where cruise ships, like flocks of graceful geese, silently maneuver their way into bustling tourist ports. I guess this is as close as I'll get to a vacation this summer but my mind is frolicking in the spray of ocean mist. Bon voyage!

I am trying out a smooth gesso surface with this painting and enjoyed not having to fight the rough waves of stiff canvas.

As you can see, Special Operation's Officer, Lt. Frank Fork sits camouflaged in cool, dark shadows under the protection of a plate in this recent dragnet. He sat by undetected for days, carefully observing every move of this flashy duo perched overhead. It was reported, in the end, violence broke out leaving in its wake a juicy-blood bath.  

I'm sure you all thought I was the one who had died! It took me forever to find an opportunity to finish this painting. By the time I got back to it, the strawberry was covered in a disguise of mold and the watermelon was literally running off the plate trying to escape the scene. Gross! I ended up pitching it all in the trash and working from memory. Oh the trials of being a painter!

This landscape painting was another challenge posted by DailyPaint Works. (above is the photo we painted from)

Painting a landscape feels like flying, such a welcome change of pace from still life. I love the loose flow of buttery pigment as it courses, glides, drifts, circulates, skims, oozes, swirls, and rolls off the fine tiny hairs of my brush with a story of its own to tell. The brush charts its own path catching light off vapors of layered atmosphere, fluid sweep of free-flowing water, or the crisp rustle of dry swaying grasses. 

It feels so natural to me, I can't imagine approaching a landscape in any other way. To labor over each exacting blade of grass, every ripple on the water's surface, or the intricate patterns of bark on a branch, would condense it all into a frozen frame of a girdle to sit lifeless and idle for all eternity. In a landscape, I want to capture the movement of breathing spirit. I want the viewer to feel the chill of the wind that's blowing through my hair, the warm rays of afternoon sun that sit perched on a shoulder, and to detect the decaying scent of autumn rising from the mists off the bank of cool waters. 

The artist job is to take it all in but then to simplify and filter down to the barest of it all, that which contains the whole. I still have miles of canvas to go but am loving my journey along the way.

Strawberry Fields Forever

"I was looking back to see, if she was looking back to see, if I was looking back to see, if she was looking back at me", said the strawberry. I set this still life up on top of a mirror and the multiplication of the strawberries went crazy. Reflections of the image, and the mirrored images in the mirror and in the silver bowl appeared every; reminding me of those crazy fun houses we went into as kids with the mirrors that made you look like you went on into infinity. 

This was a fun one to paint because it forced me to let go of what was real and what wasn't and just paint all the little spots of color and values I saw, where I saw them.

We all have heard the saying, "The present is a gift, that's why it's called the present", so here's my gift to the present. It's nearly impossible for me to ever stay in the present for very long, unless I am either meditating or painting. This is the best part of being a painter. I literally can't even tell you where I go but my mind disappears into thin air. From the book, The Art Spirit by Robert Henri this resonates with me, "At such times there is a song going on within us a song to which we listen. It fills us with surprise. We marvel at it. We would continue to hear it. But few are capable of holding themselves in the state of listening to their own song. Intellectuality steps in and as the song within us is of the utmost sensitiveness, it retires in the presence of the cold material intellect....we fall back and become our ordinary selves. Yet we live in the memory of these songs which in moments of intellectual inadvertence have been possible to us. They are the pinnacles of our experience and it is the desire to express these intimate sensations, this song from within, which motivates the masters of all art."

If you are wondering what all the commotion is about here today? It's a parade! Some of the local citizens of Down the Highway are lining the streets, just as it gets underway, commemorating the First Year Anniversary of the founding of their colorful town. Spoon float is passing in front of the judges showing off her silvery sheen. Making her golden debut is Marmalade Redbeckia, a new star and latest addition to the neighborhood. She's the only one around who can, without a whimper, stand up to face the summer inferno. She rocks!!! In spite of her demanding schedule, I think it's pretty cool how she magically produced a diminutive clone of herself onto the face of spoon. Nearly everyone is out celebrating with the exception that little imp sachi who is seen pouting in time out. He was caught trying set off a bottle rocket in spite of the ban on fireworks.

You know, every now and then, I paint a little piece of something that seems to really work in a painting. Leaves are exceptionally tough to get right but check out that one little fellow who fell off the stem and is resting half in and half out of ruby red's shadow...that was a special "aha" moment for me! I love it when that happens!!!

What a bully! Momma mango roller is at it again, crushing down the last green tree in the neighborhood to make room for yet another highway headed somewhere. Progress they call it! What a shame, and just as this comfortable citrus couple, lime and orange, were settling down to enjoy a quiet picnic under the cool shade of the canopy. 


My seven-year-old grandson and I had a great time painting from this still life we set up yesterday. While in a panic to prevent an obvious tragedy, I tensed up and painted a bit tighter than I like. To me, less is always more...the fewer brush strokes the better. I guess I just got carried away trying to rescue these near-casualty victims from ultimate destruction. Whew, that was a close call!

Miracle of miracles! Despite "exceptional" drought conditions, wild fires and record breaking heat all across Texas, imagine my surprise stumbling upon this thirsty can-can girl hanging on for dear life, like an Israelite lost in the desert of my scorched garden. From the time we moved into this house, some 20 years ago, I have had 5 ft. canas blooming from April through September expect for this year. With little-to-no rain all year, most everything is now shriveled and parched. 

I felt like a merciless butcher chopping off this young ladies long slender neck and beautiful red mane for my still life. Buckwheat is now dead...but no longer thirsty! LOL Looks like I'll have to start buying flowers to paint this summer.

This painting is my submission to DailyPaintWorks' "Upside Down" Challenge. We were given the photo above with instructions to paint it upside down from start to finish. No, I don't mean me hanging upside down painting, the photograph had to remain upside down. This technique was first introduced in the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." For some strange reason our left brains can't handle not being able to name and identify parts when things are upside down, so the submissive right brains steps in to take over. It's so much easier to draw and paint upside down. In fact I'll double-dog-dare you to try it sometime. You will find that literally everyone in the universe can draw amazingly better using this approach. I loved the way this turned out, once I was able to turn it right side up and see what I had painted. Those very cool reflections were really fun painting especially when you didn't even know they were reflections from upside down.

These lemons are bursting at the seams waiting to be squeezed into an ice cold glass of lemonade. 

They are reminding me of my son, his wife and my grandson all nestled together and hunkering down in their home with mono. I have been so busy trying to help out that I haven't had much time to paint this past week. Hopefully, we'll all be back on our games next week. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this painting. You've stumbled onto a grisly crime scene here today, where a deranged escapee from the nearby prison's kitchen has methodically dismembered an innocent young Lady. According to eyewitnesses, this cold-blooded butcher was heard ordering the other hostage about saying, "Do as I say or I'll cut you into little pieces like your friend here and turn you both into applesauce."

Thankfully this serial killer has now been apprehended and is being held in solitary dishwasher confinement. The motive in this brutal homicide is still unclear but a full investigation is underway. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin. What is this world coming to? 

Thank you for aiding with the investigation, I know it's not easy looking at such a disturbing sight.

My supply of still life wannabe stars was running low, so I had my husband pick up some apples on his weekly jaunt to the grocery store. He loves to grocery shop, go figure? When he returned and pulled these three beauties out of the bag, I was kicked in the head and ran to grab my paints and brushes. This glamorous trio of juicy Pink Ladies are seen here dressed up in brilliant fiery gowns, as they prepare to strut on down the blue violet carpeted runway. 


You know, every now and then I produce a painting that just feels right and this is one of 'em! Exhausted, I put down my weapons and went to bed with visions of Pink Ladies dancing in my head.

The blueberry kids are out playing on the beach today, under the watchful eye of a diligent warm-skinned nanny. She sits close by in what little shade she can find, alongside the guard stand where a towering Black Eyed Susan is now on active duty.  

This was not the way the day began, in fact, this golden beauty is the replacement for a crude and deceitful white carnation who was on guard watch when we all arrived. You see, everything was going well until I got into a heated skirmish with him over his lack of values. I have to admit, I threw the first punch and then proceeded to hit him with one loaded brush after another. The regretful encounter ended when I threw him and his stem across my studio as far as I could throw. After wiping my canvas in total defeat, suddenly straight out of nowhere, entered this dark-eyed Baywatch hero who took the stand and ended up saving this painting from near drowning.

I've been stuck on the subject of food lately, as you can always tell when I'm trying to drop a few. Why is it whenever I try not to think of food, that's all I seem to be able to think about? However, here are some very colorful low-fat companions I came across while foraging around in my veggie bin. They were all piled up waiting to be sliced and diced into a nutritious soup. The trouble is dining on hot veggie soup will be miserable in all this summer heat, so I'll probably have to chase it down with something cold...like a little Blue Bell French Vanilla topped off with a smidgen of Hershey's chocolate syrup and well, maybe just a few chopped pecans. I'll skip the whipped cream after all I am dieting. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Somehow watching my daughter try on long flowing, creamy-white satin wedding dresses all day Saturday, reminded me of this painting I had left unfinished. Do you recognize the models? This still life is actually the tragic demise of last week's "Peachy Keen" peaches, along with the discarded pit. It was a challenge being my first attempt at half submerged fruit. I was afraid it wasn't going to make it down the aisle into prime time but with few tucks here and there...I do think it now fits.
